AROUND 250 senior citizens from Kampung Chempaka in Petaling Jaya received food packets ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
The food packets were distributed by the Yuen Leong Sing Fatt Temple — located in Kampung Chempaka — which carries out this annual event in conjunction with celebrations.
The temple’s lion and dragon dance master Loke Moon Hoong, who was also the event organising chairman, said the event was in its fifth year.
“We only give out to residents of Kampung Chempaka aged 65 and above,” said Loke at the event.
“Banners are put up prior to the event so that all residents who qualify under the age group can register with us to receive their foodstuff.
“Through this event, we hope to promote filial piety to parents,” he said.
Each packet comprises rice, beehoon, biscuits, vegetarian sauce bottle and sugar, all of which are donated by sponsors and supporters.
Loke said on the ninth day of Chinese New Year which would fall on Feb 11, the temple would organise a free dinner and give away angpow to the senior citizens.
Special guests at the event were Datuk Dr Wong Sai Hou, Datuk Lim Choon Kin, Datuk Kho Poh Eng, Gan Keng as well as the temple chairman Lee Mun Hoong.
Dr Wong said it is a commendable effort by the temple to give out alms to the senior folk prior to Chinese New Year.
“It is a show of respect to the senior citizens and this has also been a yearly tradition in this village.
“Also, the bountiful of prosperity continues through because the recipients will be getting their angpow on Feb 11 after receiving their sundry goodies today,” he said.
In his speech, he called on everyone to start the habit of recycling by discarding waste according to plastics or paper inside the recycling bins placed near the basketball court.
Lim said Kampung Chempaka is a special village which has various associations organising different activities.
“During my time as Damansara Utama assemblyman, I managed to obtain grant from the state government to build a tent sheltering the basketball court so more people can make it whether rain or shine,” said Lim, adding he hoped for the continuous support of donors and supporters so that this alms-giving tradition could be continued.
Loke said the temple was previously located in Jalan Pahang KL before it was relocated here about 41 years ago.
