Ooi Ah Bah: Chinese students began to give up their learning in Bahasa Chinese after completed six years of Chinese education in primary school

Nowadays, the Chinese students began to give up their learning in Bahasa Chinese after completed six years of Chinese education in primary school; it lost 30% of students learning in Chinese subject after PMR, and further increased to 50% of students abandoning to take Chinese subject in SPM.

There were 54,947 examinee took the Chinese subject in SPM 2010, which only the half of UPSR’s examinee in the same year.

This situation has been going on for several years, although people of all walks of life including Deputy Education Minister cum MCA Education Bureau Chief Dato’ Dr. Wee Ka Siong also concerned on this phenomenon and finding the ways to improve, but have not seen any results until now.

Recently, Dato’ Dr. Wee Ka Siong held the first stop “enroll for Chinese language movement” at Sekolah Menengah Seri Kembangan. Although it can help to achieve some palliative effect, but do not necessarily substantial increased in the total of Chinese subject’s candidates in SPM.

Two weeks ago, MCA Wilayah Education Bureau Chief revealed that Education Bureau setting the difficult questions in SPM examination in the name of “pursuit of the international standards”; the examiner severe when marking the examination papers and caused the students hard to pass in the examination of Chinese language.

This is an argument on facts – In the last analysis, there are difficult to achieve the result of Chinese language in “A+”, resulting in candidates afraid to take the Chinese’s subject.

In fact, this problem has existed for a long time; even the people those slightly understand on the Chinese education issues believe it is the crux of the problem, but they feel helpless and worried about it.

According to the SPM results announced by 2010, although there was little improvement in Chinese subject, but the result in grade “A+” was only achieving the rate of 0.3% from 404,135 of candidates; compared with 8.6% of Malay subject and 3.7% of English subject, the results in Chinese are the unfavourable score!

In addition, there are only 2.8% of candidates obtained A grade, as 7% of the candidates failed in the examination, this situation made people worried.

The difficult to obtain A grade and the high failure in Chinese subject affected the students willingness to take this subject. On the other side, many parents even some schools do not encourage the students to apply for Chinese subject to avoid affected their overall results and school reputation.

Under the measure announced by last year, the Ministry of Education limited candidates must take 10+2 subjects in SPM but do not included Chinese language into the compulsory subjects. After the strong opposition of Chinese educators, Chinese language only becomes the dispensable elective subject. We can imagine that, if Chinese language does not have the high status and commercial value in the international arena, the consequences will be unimaginable!

The Ministry of Education should thorough study and investigate the reasons and inside stories to effectively resolved the decrease of candidates number in Chinese subject, in order to achieve the goal of effecting a permanent cure.

People now expected on Deputy Education Minister Dato’ Dr. Wee Ka Siong who take a heavy responsibility in Chinese education – credited him to make the proper use of his power during his administration, in order to reform and adjust the Chinese education in Malaysia, protecting the Chinese children’s right to obtain the Chinese education and guarantees the healthy development of Chinese education.

黄亚峇: 华裔生修完六年小学的华文科后开始逐渐放弃进修华文

(吉隆坡28日讯)马华雪州联委会教育局主任黄亚峇今日发表文告透露,国内的华裔学生在修完六年小学的华文科之后,便开始逐渐放弃进修华文,到中三的评估考试,先流失约30%人数,至中五的大马教育文凭考试,进一步增加到为数一半的学生完全弃考华文科。

他也透露,2010年共有5万4947名考生选考大马教育文凭考试中的华文科,比之同年报考小六检定考试中华文科的人数,足足减少了一半。

“这情况其实已经持续了好几年,虽然关心华教的各界人士,包括身为教育部副部长兼马华中央教育局主任的拿督魏家祥博士,皆对此现象深表关注并想方设法要加以改善和纠正,唯至今仍未见到任何成效。”

他说,最近在斯里肯安邦国中由拿督魏家祥博士亲自主持推介的首站‘报读报考华文运动’,或许能达到某种程度的治标作用,但并不一定能大幅度提高报考大马教育文凭华文科考生的人数。

黄亚峇认为,二周前马华联邦直辖区教育局主任王鸿财揭露的有关“教局中文组在大马教育文凭考试华文科出考题时,以‘追求国际水准’之名而出题深奥,批改时则严苛成性,成为华文科难考的幕後黑手”事件,自有其论点根据,并非空穴来风;因为追根究底,该项华文科难考到特优(A+)成绩,其实就是造成考生对这科目却步的主要原因之一。

黄亚峇也指出,根据他了解,有关问题其实存在已久,对华教课题稍有认知的人,都认为这是问题的症结所在,但都爱莫能助而深感无奈和极度担忧。

他说,根据刚放榜的2010年大马教育文凭考试成绩,华文科成绩虽有些许进步,但考获A+的%率仍然只是区区的0.3%,若和整体40万4135名报考马来文的考生之中,就有8.6%考获A+,而英文科也有3.7%考获A+的成绩作比较,即显示出华文科的成绩的确是斯人独憔悴!

“另一方面,考获华文科A等的亦只有2.8%;而不及格率7%,比之全科落榜只0.69%的巨大差距,又在在是另一种令人费解和担忧的情况。”

黄亚峇指出,正是这种特优难求和不及格率又偏高的情况,大大的影响学生报考华文科的意愿,而很多家长甚至是有些校方也不鼓励学生报考华文科,以免学生的整体成绩受到影响,进而影响校誉。

他也认为,在大马教育文凭考试于去年刚实施的限考10+2科方案下,华文科并没有被列入10项必修科之内,而只在华教人士的极力反对之后才勉强成为可有可无的选修科目,试想在这种情况之下,如不是华文在国际舞台拥有崇高的地位和迅速提升的商业价值,其日渐式微的趋势确实将更加不堪设想!

他最后指出,要对症下药有效的彻底解决大马教育文凭考试中华文科考生人数剧降的问题,还需教育部认真探讨和深入调查个中原因和内情,方能达到治本的目的。

他也寄望身负华教重任的教育部副部长拿督魏家祥博士,能在他的任期内,善加利用本身的职权,为大马的华文教育作出适当的改革和调适,以维护华裔子弟接受华文教育的基本权利和保障华文教育的健全发展。
